Case study 6.2 Tesco develops a buy-side e-commerce system for supply chain management

Q1 what benefits does Tesco’s information exchange offer to the retailer and its suppliers?

   For the suppliers who join the Tesco’s information exchange (Tie) can access the tie web site and view daily electronic point-of-sale data from Tesco stores. In addition, they have a more clear understanding of their specific products lines and get more details of actual store demand, depot stockholdings and weekly sale forecasts. Consequently, they can manage the supplying better and reduce the inventory. At the same time, the retailers get benefit when suppliers improve their service. Thus, the better two-way collaboration can be built between retailers and suppliers.

Q2 what differences have the use of the TIE added over the original EDI system?

1. EDI is one-way collaboration, Tesco can order goods from suppliers according to the information on suppliers’ web site.
  TIE is two-way collaboration, which allows suppliers can access the data of the retailer. This change is not only help suppliers predict demand and reduce inventory, but also a combination of retailing knowledge and product knowledge of suppliers.
2. The management of promotion can be done well between supplier and retailer by TIE, as the shared data can support collaborate decisions during the process of data analysing.

Q3 Discuss why only 2 of Tesco’s suppliers have fundamentally altered the way they work as a result of TIE.

Generally, one supplier not only supply to one retailer, the Tie module is not adopted in all retailers which supplied by that supplier. Therefore, they can fundamentally change the way they work.

Mission and vision of NWS

 Mission:
    Making the best logo designing and manufacturing .
    Providing the best solution for your work wear, safety clothing and footwear

Vision:
   To be the specialist on the field of  logo designing and embroidery .

List of projects:

Social networks
    Build the social network of NWS, such as the Facebook. It includes the information and communication.
Firstly, it is a convenient and efficient way to advertise to let more people know NWS. During posting new articles and uploading more pictures can let customers know the latest activities and new products.
Secondly, it is easy to get comments, suggestions and demand from a range of customers.
Thirdly, NWS can collect designs and ideas through the website by holding an online logo designing competition. Then the design and ideas are come from the different people even different country. As I know the designs and embroidery of some housewives and old ladies are terrific .The power of public could be stronger.
Lastly, NWS can provide the membership on the network, the long term follows and good comments suppliers can get the accumulate points which can transform to the discount or some gifts.

Service
- For some long term customers and big organization, NWS can provide renew design free if they need.
- Providing discount when the organization order the garments second time, more discount follow more orders.
- Provide more choices on the readymade products to customers,such as the outdoors clothes and equipments. It can satisfy more demands from more customers.

Collaboration
          Cooperate with some suppliers, establishing the permanent relationship then reduce the cost of buying materials. The coopertate suppliers can be the friend link on the social network.

Website
        Website is the first place most customer arrive. Therefore, it is key of the first impression and if it is attractive to customers.
        To beautify the website and provide more choices online, and guarantee the efficient delivery service to customers.

Key project- social network

The key project is building the social network, which provides the latest news of NWS, holding the logo designing competition, and communication with customers through their comments. It is a quite cheap way to establishing the social network, and holding the competition is the most efficient way to get most ideas in a short time.

The SLEPT factors are:

-Social factors
-Economics factors

Supply side and sell side of NWS

supply&sell side map

Supply side :According to the description of NWS website, it is the specialist for logo design and embroidery. At first, they can design the logo for different company or organizations, like school, club, company and family. Secondly, they can provide embroidery according to the customers’ option, either use customers’ own garments, or use the readymade clothes of the NWS to do the large productions. So they also have the suppliers. There are three suppliers; first one is for supplying the raw material and facilities, such as thread, cloth, pins and sewing machine. Second one is the readymade cloth for the volume-produce and selling through the website directly. The third one is renew design, we consider that NWS get the creative logo design by cooperate with other design company.On the supply side the association between NWS and other companies help NWS get more fresh idea and reduce the cost on other professional area.  The NWS do procurement from specific business, so the E-business model is B2B.

Sell-side:
   The NWS have to ways to sell their products, through website and warehouse.   Website: Website is mainly face to the individual customers, at same time it is open to any corporate and organization. Individual consumers usually order or buy small quantity of communities, buy online and pay on line. So this E-business trade to customers is B2C model, otherwise, to the organization is B2B model.   Warehouse: On their website, NWS welcome any organization and customers to go to their fully refurbished warehouse to see the garments. But the organizations are the dominate customers, because the warehouse is not a shop, hence, facing to too many individuals will bring potential cost increasing. Model is the same as the website which depends on the type of customers. To individual customers is B2C, to organization is B2B.

BI5691 Assignment1: Supply and sell side map of North West Supplies

BI5691 Supply and sell side map of North West Supplies

Explanation:

I chose the business case in Chaffey’s book (case study 1.2 .p.33) ,”North West Supplies(NWS) extends its reach online”. It is a web store for mail-order supplies of military and outdoors equipments.
From this case study, I got some information of its sell side. NWS do the selling through its website. The customers browse the website of NWS in order to buy some stuff. So from my point, I divided the sell side into 4 parts: Browse, Stock, Order and Pay.
- Browse

* Graphic design
It is a kind of advertisement to attract more customers, make the information more professional and up-to-date
* Best, featured and latest products
In some supermarket, we can also see some products with red label singed “best seller”. It is a way to highlight some product and promote them.
* Search engine
It led to an increase in orders from new customers and even from abroad.
* Segmentation
The site split into 2 sections, and now it have split into 6 sections, let the customers can chose the stuff in easier and clear ways.
* Sub-categories
This provide the clear link to the areas of interest and contain fewer pages to browse, then helping customers to make choice easily and more quickly.
* Cross- selling
When customers are choosing some product, there are some related products’ link, maybe same kind, interest or complementary. It is also the strategy for promotion.

- Stock
Checking the stock online need the aid of database.
Database provide the clear and efficient figure of the stock.
- Order
When customer browses some products, they can decide buy or not buy.
If they want to buy, just put the product into the cart, otherwise they can put it into the wish list. Or they can put it into compare; compare with same kind of products, then chose the best one.
- Pay

My ideas

Social Network

Open the networks like facebook, be the online friend with customers .Gain the comments and demands from the previous customers and potential customers.
And can get some customers picture when they wearing the stuff of NWS, I think it is the good way to get close to customers and interaction with them.

Club website

Based on NWS provide the outdoors equipment and clothes, they can build the specific website for customers who like outdoors sports. Building sports club website ,let customers to be the members of these clubs. For example the Climbing Club .
